CGPA to Percentage Formula

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is converted to percentage using a multiplier that depends on the board or university. Here are the common formulas.

CBSE Formula

For CBSE class 10 and 12:

Percentage = CGPA × 9.5

Example: If CGPA is 9.2, then Percentage = 9.2 × 9.5 = 87.4%

Engineering / University (common 10-point mapping)

Many engineering colleges treat a 10-point CGPA as a linear percent mapping:

Percentage = CGPA × 10

Example: If CGPA is 8.5, then Percentage = 8.5 × 10 = 85%

VTU-style Formula (commonly referenced by calculators)

Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10

Example: If CGPA is 8.0, then Percentage = (8.0 − 0.75) × 10 = 72.5%

AKTU-style Formula (commonly referenced by calculators)

Percentage = CGPA × 10 − 7.5

Example: If CGPA is 8.0, then Percentage = 8.0 × 10 − 7.5 = 72.5%

Other Boards

Some universities use different conversion policies. Check your official notification or look for your board’s conversion chart. You can use a custom multiplier in the calculator when you have that number.

Why the CGPA-to-percentage formula varies across Indian universities

India does not have a single CGPA-to-percentage formula. CBSE schools use percentage = CGPA × 9.5. Most engineering universities follow the same multiplier for student transcripts. But Anna University uses percentage = (CGPA − 0.5) × 10. VTU uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Some autonomous institutions publish their own table that maps CGPA bands to percentage bands rather than using a multiplier at all.

For applications abroad — US graduate schools, Canadian PR points, Australian skilled migration — always send the official transcript with the university's own conversion formula printed on it. WES (World Education Services) and similar credential evaluators rejected millions of applications in the last decade for self-converted percentages that did not match the university's formula.

Same CGPA, different percentages by formula

CBSE / most Indian universities: CGPA 8.0
8.0 × 9.5 = 76.0%
Anna University: CGPA 8.0
(8.0 − 0.5) × 10 = 75.0%
VTU: CGPA 8.0
(8.0 − 0.75) × 10 = 72.5%
CGPA 9.0 (CBSE formula)
9.0 × 9.5 = 85.5%
CGPA 9.0 (Anna formula)
(9.0 − 0.5) × 10 = 85.0%

For job applications inside India, both CGPA and the equivalent percentage are usually accepted. For placement portals like Internshala or LinkedIn, enter the figure printed on your transcript — do not back-calculate.
