How to read Indian discount tags without getting fooled
Most Indian retail discount tags follow one of three patterns. (1) Flat X% off — straightforward; selling price = MRP × (1 − X/100). (2) Buy 1 get 1 free — equivalent to a flat 50% discount per unit on the pair. (3) Up to X% off — a marketing phrase meaning "the deepest discount in the store is X%"; most items will be discounted much less.
The most misleading pattern is the stacked discount: "30% off + extra 20% off" does not equal 50% off. The actual saving is 1 − (0.7 × 0.8) = 44%. Sale banners exploit this confusion regularly. Run the multiplication, never just add the percentages.
Indian sale-tag worked examples
- Flipkart Big Billion sale: ₹38,999 mobile at 22% off
- Save ₹8,580 → pay ₹30,419
- Myntra: 50% + extra 20% off ₹2,500 kurta
- 2,500 × 0.5 × 0.8 = ₹1,000 (60% off, not 70%)
- BIG Bazaar Wednesday Bazaar: 25% off ₹1,800 grocery bill
- Save ₹450 → pay ₹1,350
- Restaurant 20% off pre-tax bill of ₹2,000
- 2,000 × 0.8 = ₹1,600 + 5% GST = ₹1,680
Always read whether the discount is on MRP or on the inflated "was" price (which many e-commerce sites silently inflate before applying the discount). Cross-check with another seller before celebrating the saving.
