Where averages matter in Indian school and household contexts
The arithmetic mean is the most-used statistic in Indian classrooms — average marks, average runs, average attendance, average household income — but it is also the most easily distorted. A class topper scoring 99 in a class of 30 with everyone else around 50 pulls the mean up by about 1.6 marks; the median (the middle value) doesn't move at all. For most public-facing data, the median is the more honest number.
One common Indian use-case: best-of-five-subject averaging in CBSE Class 10. The board calculates your aggregate as the simple mean of the top five subjects (out of 6 appeared). Another: a cricket batting average is total runs ÷ number of times out, not ÷ number of innings — the difference shows up because not-out innings are excluded from the denominator.
Indian-context average examples
- CBSE best-of-five subjects: 95, 92, 88, 85, 80
- Sum 440 ÷ 5 = 88.0% aggregate
- Average IPL batting: 480 runs in 12 innings, 3 not-out
- 480 ÷ (12 − 3) = 53.33 average
- Average household monthly grocery spend (4 months): ₹8,200, ₹7,900, ₹9,400, ₹8,500
- ₹8,500 mean
- Average daily Sensex move: 80, −120, 45, 200, −60 pts
- (80 − 120 + 45 + 200 − 60) ÷ 5 = 29 pts
