How Indian boards convert percentage to grade
CBSE follows a 9-point grade scale: A1 (91–100, grade point 10), A2 (81–90, GP 9), B1 (71–80, GP 8), B2 (61–70, GP 7), C1 (51–60, GP 6), C2 (41–50, GP 5), D (33–40, GP 4), E1/E2 (below 33, fail). The CGPA on the report card is the average of the grade points across five main subjects. ICSE uses a different scale that is finer-grained at the top (A+/A/B+/B/...), and most state boards publish their own band table.
University-level grading in India usually follows the UGC 10-point system: O (outstanding, 90+), A+ (80–89), A (70–79), B+ (60–69), B (55–59), C (50–54), P (40–49), F (below 40). The pass mark is typically 40% per subject and 50% aggregate at most undergraduate institutions, though IITs/NITs and many private universities use higher thresholds.
