GST in India: how the rates and slabs work
GST (Goods and Services Tax) replaced VAT, service tax and several other indirect taxes in 2017. It currently runs on five main slabs: 0% (essentials like fresh vegetables, milk), 5% (sugar, edible oils, life-saving drugs), 12% (computers, processed food), 18% (most services, soaps, electronics) and 28% (luxury cars, tobacco, sin goods plus a cess on top). Knowing which slab applies tells you the multiplier.
Two practical points. First, GST on most B2B transactions is recoverable via input tax credit, so the headline 18% you see on a service invoice is not actually a cost for a GST-registered business. Second, the rate is on the taxable value, not on a price that already includes tax — to back-calculate from a tax-inclusive price, divide by (1 + rate ÷ 100).
India GST worked examples
- 18% GST on ₹3,000 SaaS invoice
- Tax ₹540 → total ₹3,540
- 5% GST on ₹2,500 restaurant bill (non-AC)
- Tax ₹125 → total ₹2,625
- 12% GST on ₹6,000 hotel room (₹1k–7.5k tariff)
- Tax ₹720 → total ₹6,720
- 28% GST on ₹15,00,000 SUV (+22% cess)
- GST ₹4,20,000 + cess ₹3,30,000 → total ₹22,50,000
- Back-calc: ₹1,180 inclusive at 18%
- 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000 base + ₹180 GST
