Where percentage tax math shows up in Indian filing
Income tax in India is progressive — different slices of your income are taxed at different rates. Under the new (default) regime for FY 2024-25, the slabs are 0% up to ₹3 lakh, 5% from ₹3–7 lakh, 10% from ₹7–10 lakh, 15% from ₹10–12 lakh, 20% from ₹12–15 lakh and 30% above ₹15 lakh, plus a 4% health and education cess on the total tax. That is why your average tax rate is always lower than your top marginal rate.
Other percentage-based taxes you encounter: TDS (10% on FD interest above thresholds, 1% on property purchase above ₹50 lakh, 5% on rent above ₹50,000/month), STT (0.1% on equity delivery), LTCG (12.5% on listed equity gains above ₹1.25 lakh per year), professional tax (state-specific, typically ₹200/month flat in Maharashtra and Karnataka).
